Surfing is a lifetime sport that is a great outlet for local and global exploration and stewardship. However, it is an endeavor, sport and lifestyle that carries with it a risk of injury and a duty to assist others in need. Love of surfing, exploration and medicine inspired the founding of The Waves of Health.
Surfing continues to be a part of the organization’s soul. Dr. Everline and Dr. Boni have been to various developing countries in search of waves, and knew first hand that many communities lacked modern medical care. Their interest in giving back to these communities was part of the inspiration for waves of health. Several projects are keeping the ‘Waves” in Waves of Health.
Dr. Everline has led the charge in keeping the ‘waves’ in Waves of Health. Dr. Everline has initiated a program to provide medical coverage to surf contests in New Jersey and elsewhere. He has been the on-site doctor for surf contests such as the 2009 Belmar Pro, 2009 Billabong Pipeline Masters and the 2009 New Jersey Eastern Surfing Association Championships.
In addition to providing medical care to surf contestants and spectators, Waves of Health and Dr. Everline have been developing educational materials for traveling surfers. The program is intended to illustrate medical issues encountered in remote places and the ocean.
Dr. Everline has written a comprehensive Surfer's Health Guide with Andrew Nathanson, MD and Mark Renneker, MD of the Surfers' Medical Association, due to be published in 2011
Waves of Health is also working to make surfers understand that many communities they visit are struggling with various medical and social deficiencies. Through various outreach initiatives, WoH is educating traveling surfers so that they will support the communities they visit.
On December 12-18, 2009, Dr. Everline is hosting a conference dedicated to Surf related medical topics in Hawaii. The conference, which offers continuing medical education credit, was developed in partnership with the Wildness Medical Society.
