You are here: Completed Missions / Tropical Storm Noel

After Tropical Storm Noel devastated the Caribbean in November 2007, many were left without homes, food, or livelihood. The people of Dominican Republic were hit hard with over 87 deaths. Thousands were left homeless after the relentless downpour caused river banks to burst, and substantial flooding to occur. In the aftermath, the large reservoirs of stagnant water have caused another crisis as water-borne infections have begun to sicken many people.

Fortunately, many countries and organizations have provided relief with nonperishable foods, clothing, and emergency supplies. Waves of Health was a part of this effort. On November 24, 2007 with the help of Joanna Losman and The Dominican Golf Association USA, Waves of Health was able to assist Luis Manuel Morillo King Hospital in the town of La Vega. Dr. Humberto Jimenez and Daramis Collado provided over 700 units of various antibiotics, such as ceftriaxone, penicillin G, gentamicin, and metronidazole to the hospital’s pharmacy. This needed supply of antibiotics will enable the local doctors to treat various infections such as gastroenteritis, cellulitis, and meningitis.

In addition to the medications, Dr. Jimenez and Ms. Collado distributed clothing to new mothers in the maternity and pediatric wards of the hospital. Thanks to the generous contributions from friends, family, Joanna Losman and the Dominican Golf Association USA, Waves of Health has been able to help many people in the La Vega area.
