DAJABON Nov. 2011

Waves of Health returned to Dajabon on October 29, 2011.   A surgical team from LIG Global lead by Drs. Ernani Sadural, Raghu Thunga and Sarah Timmapuri joined the Waves mission.  A combined force of 25 doctors, 7 nurses, 8 pharmacists, 11 support staff, one physician assistant, and 7 Peace Corps translators worked with Tomas Metz and his family to provide care to 1800 medical patients and 150 surgical patients.   The addition of surgical and gynecological care and ultrasound imaging enabled Waves of Health to provide better care to underserved patients in Dajabon.
In addition to evaluating and treating patients, Dr. Dan Sheps and Nurse Practitioner AnnaMarie Matos continued work on the Diabetes study.  Thirty five patients were reevaluated to determine the best methods to treat Diabetic patients in a developing community. Another 70 patients were enrolled into the study.   By closely following and treating these patients we will be able to better control their diabetes and measure their progress.
LIGglobal and Waves of Health were also able to achieve a medical technology first.  Real time ultrasound images were transmitted from Dajabon and LaViga to New Jersey.

Cabarete  November 4, 2011

A Waves of Health medical team went to a small community outside of Cabarete on the North coast.   With the help of Jesarin  Puente, President  of the Dominican Surfing Federation,  and Kelly  Mearkle,   a team of 5 doctors, one physician assistant, 4 pharmacist and 4 translators were able to evaluate and treat 200 patients.  Because of the success of this clinic, Waves of Health plans to return to Cabarete to provide medical and pharmacy care to underserved patients.
